Juma Santos è un percussionista jazz statunitense.

Nel corso di quarant'anni di carriera, Santos ha frequentato svariati generi musicali, dedicando particolare attnzione al jazz, e alle musiche di derivazione africana e caraibica, collaborando con alcuni dei più importanti musicisti della scena, tra cui Miles Davis, con cui collaborò per l'incisione di Bitches Brew e con cui fu in tour per un anno, Nina Simone, David Sanborn, Taj Mahal (musicista, Ahmad Jamal, Dave Liebman, Pee Wee Ellis, Jack DeJohnette, Gato Garcia, Don Alias, Freddie Hubbard e molti altri. Santos ha diretto e dirige proprie formazioni: Rosewater Foundation, Afro Jazz Messengers, Pan-African Drum Ensemble, Juma Society, e Sounds of the Urban Forest.

Lenny White was born in New York in 1949.

He began his career as a drummer, initially playing in local groups.

In the early 1970's he played with Miles Davis on 'Bitches Brew' before joining Return To Forever.

When the group split up in 1976 he signed directly to the Nemperor label (via Atlantic) for 'Venusian Summer' (1976), 'Big City' (1976) and 'Streamline' (1977).


In 1978, he switched to Elektra for 'Best Of Friends', before forming a group Twennynine which comprised:

Carlo Vaughn (vocals)

Jocelyn Smith (vocals)

Skip Anderson (keyboards)

Barry Johnson (bass)

and Eddy Martinez (guitar) in 1979.

Recording as featured artist with the group, further Elektra albums included 'Attitude' (1983), including 'Didn't Know About Love (Till I Found You)'.

He later became one of the Jamaica Boys, a group also comprising of Marcus Miller (bass) and Dinky Bingham (vocals).


As a drummer he has recorded sessions with artists including John Klernmer, Miroslav Vitous, Pharaoh Sanders, Santana and Bob James while he has also produced for Zuice ('I'm A Survivor'), Wax ('Do You Believe In Magic'), Pieces Of A Dream and Nicki Richards ('Naked To The World') amongst others.

E' un gioco di parole, certo. *Witches' brew* in inglese sta a
indicare una *miscela esplosiva*, un qualcosa di potenzialmente
pericoloso.

Per quanto riguarda le *bitches*, ricorda Carlos Santana, nelle note
del box Columbia *The Complete B.B. Sessions*, che Miles, all'epoca,
"sembrava sempre in compagnia di un gruppo di donne che certi di noi
avevano ribattezzato *the cosmic ladies*. C'era sua moglie Betty
(Mabry), c'erano Collette, Monica e la ragazza di Jimi Hendrix, Devon.
E tutte queste donne, a poco a poco, riuscirono a cambiare Miles, il
suo modo di vestire, i luoghi che frequentava, la musica che
ascoltava. E' in gran parte a causa della loro influenza che Miles ha
cominciato a prendere sul serio James Brown e Sly Stone, oltre che a
frequentare Hendrix. [...] Ho sempre pensato che *Bitches Brew*,
l'album, fosse un omaggio che Miles aveva voluto rendere - alla sua
maniera - a queste donne che gli avevano fatto vedere un mondo del
tutto nuovo e che l'avevano incoraggiato a compiere l'ennesimo grande
